There are basically two suture needle types, eyed or eyeless, according to ALN Magazine. An eyed needle has a hole much like a regular sewing needle and needs to be threaded. The eyeless needle has the thread or suture crimped within the needle.
Suture needles can also be straight or half curved, or ski, says ALN Magazine. Straight needles are for when the surgeon has easy access to the surgical site and is best on skin wounds, nerves and blood vessels. The half-curved needle works best in laparoscopic procedures.
Other suture needles are 1/4, 3/8, 1/2 and 5/8 circles, says ALN Magazine. The 3/8 circle needle is the most popular.
