Swiss chard is a variety of leafy green vegetable related to beets and spinach. It is part of the chenopod, or goosefoot, family of vegetables, named because the shape of the leaves of this family resemble a goose's foot.
Swiss chard is one of the most popular vegetables in Mediterranean cuisine. It is one of the healthiest and most nutritionally dense vegetables on the planet, with one cup of chopped chard providing 300 percent of the recommended daily value of vitamin K. In addition, it contains high levels of vitamins A and C, as well as magnesium, iron, potassium and dietary fiber.
