Sydney, Australia, is located in the state of New South Wales, which is on the country's southeast coast along the Tasman Sea. It is located to the east of the Blue Mountains, to the south of the Hawkesbury River and to the north of Royal National Park.

Sydney is in Cumberland County and is the capital of the state of New South Wales. Sydney is located across both the Cumberland Plain, which is a flat area covering the south of the city, and Hornsby Plateau, a sandstone region with deep valleys in the north of the city. The large Sydney Basin covers much of the coastal area of New South Wales.
