What are some symptoms of a fingernail melanoma?

A black or brown streak under a fingernail may be a symptom of a rare type of melanoma called acral lentiginous melanoma, according to the Mayo Clinic. It is more common in persons with dark skin than those with fair skin.

Acral lentiginous melanoma is a “hidden melanoma” that may also occur on the soles of the feet and the palms of the hands, explains the Mayo Clinic. Other hidden melanomas may occur on the scalp, genitals, mucus membranes or between the fingers and toes.

Melanoma can occur anywhere on the body, states WebMD. Also known as skin cancer, melanoma affects pigment cells called melanocytes. Typically, melanoma appears on the face, trunk, upper back and other body parts that are exposed to ultraviolet, or UV, light. Common symptoms of skin cancer include asymmetrically-shaped moles with uneven borders. Moles that change color or itch or bleed should be examined by a doctor, says Mayo Clinic.
