Symptoms of Meniere's disease usually occur in episodes lasting 20 minutes to four hours, the American Academy of Otolaryngology notes. During these periods, sufferers may experience sensitivity to loud noises and distorted perception. Meniere's disease is most common between the ages of 20 and 50, and the condition can lead to permanent hearing loss. The cause of the disease is unknown, but doctors believe it stems from an irregular buildup of fluid in the ear.
