Who takes over if the vice president dies?

According to the 25th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, if the office of the vice president becomes empty, the president must nominate a new vice president. If both houses of Congress confirm the choice, the nominee assumes the office.

Prior to the 25th Amendment, the Constitution did not provide a means by which to fill a vacant vice presidency, and the office had sometimes lain open for years at a time. Since the adoption of the amendment in 1967, two men have ascended to the vice presidency using the procedure outlined in the 25th Amendment: Gerald Ford in 1973 and Nelson Rockefeller in 1974.
