Where is the Tamil language spoken?

Tamil is predominantly spoken in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu, as well as the Indian union territory Puducherry. Tamil has been recognized as one of the official languages in Sri Lanka and Singapore and has a large number of native speakers in several countries across the world.

While Tamil is predominantly spoken in the state of Tamil Nadu in India, its native speakers have traveled across the world. Even today, native Tamil speakers can be found in Malaysia, Mauritius, Fiji, South Africa, the United States of America, United Kingdom, Australia and Canada, to where families from Tamil Nadu have emigrated.
