Some of the tanks that were used in World War II include the Hungarian 38M Toldi and 40M Turan, the Italian Carro Armato L6/40, and the British Cruiser, Crusader and Challenger. During WWII, the tanks played a critical role for both the Allies and Axis powers.
Other examples of tanks include the M4 Sherman, the Tiger, the Panther and the Iosif Stalin. Tank designs became heavier as the war progressed. In 1939, most tanks had maximum armor of 30 millimeters or less. Medium tanks of 1939 weighed around 20 tons. By 1945, typical medium tanks had maximum armor over 60 millimeters thick and weights of 30 to 45 tons.
