What is tax cess?

Cess is an alternative term that can be used for the word tax. It is most commonly used in Great Britain and Ireland to refer to a local tax; while in Scotland, the word cess refers to a land tax.

In India, cess can be used to refer to a specific tax category. The phrase is used as a suffix. For example, a property-cess or a land-cess, include the cess suffix. Cess can also be used to describe a charge that is levied by the government for a certain purpose, such as an education cess to support basic education in India.
