As of 2015, taxi fares in Washington, D.C. are about average when compared to fares in 39 other major United States cities, according to The Washington Post. For example, a five mile trip costs about $13.80 in Washington D.C. This trip costs approximately $19.10 in Honolulu and 10.50 in Detroit.
The initial fare, cost-per-mile and wait time charges vary depending on the city. Washington D.C. has fares comparable to Salt Lake City and Kansas City. Cities such as Honolulu, San Diego and San Jose have some of the highest total fares in the U.S. Detroit, Cincinnati and Jacksonville are some of the cities with the lowest fares.
