The Baltimore Colts were the first NFL team to have a full-time cheerleading squad. The cheerleading unit was formed in 1954 by female fans of the team.
The Baltimore Colts cheerleaders did not receive pay during their first several years, but they eventually received free tickets to home games. Cheering was performed as a show of loyalty, according to former cheerleader Patricia Brodkowski. The women bought their own uniforms and megaphones and assembled their own pom-poms. Participation in volunteer work and fashion shows helped them raise money to buy cheerleading supplies. Cheerleaders who traveled to away games, such as the 1958 championship, had to pay their own travel fees.
