How do I defrag my computer?

To defrag a computer, click on the Start button, go to the defrag program, and hit the Analyze button if the program calls for it. Use the CHKDSK scanner to fix any errors before commencing the defrag program.

  1. Back up files, and run a scan

    Back up all photos, files and other items before starting the scanner. Scan the entire drive to make sure it is in good condition. Make sure all programs and anti-virus scanners are closed.

  2. Defrag the computer

    Click on the Start button, and look for the defrag icon. Click on the analyze button to begin the process. Allow anywhere from 30 minutes to several hours to pass for the program to finish.

  3. Record the results

    Take note of any recorded errors before closing the program. Use that information to fix the hard drive.
