What is Google Reader?

Google Reader was a feed reader operated by Google. It allowed readers to subscribe to RSS and Atom feeds. Feeds are lists of items that come from websites such as blogs, news, services or photo albums.
Google Reader was created in 2005 by Chris Wetherell. In July 2013, Google discontinued Google Reader. According to Google, its following was declining and the company wanted to focus on fewer products. Many people were upset and signed petitions trying to get Google to continue Google Reader. There was some speculation that the real reason for the closure was that Google wanted users to read and share information on Google+.
