Goiter is not a disease but simply a condition evidenced by any enlargement of the thyroid gland, says WebMD. Goiters may disappear over time without medical attention or may be a symptom of a more serious condition such as Graves’ disease, Hashimoto’s thyroiditis and multinodular goiter disorder, states the American Thyroid Association. Outside the United States, iodine deficiency frequently causes goiters.
