What is the tendon behind the knee called?

According to the Cascade Wellness Clinic, the popliteal tendon is situated behind the knee. The tendon connects the popliteus muscle to the femur bone just above the knee.

The Clinic explains that when the knee is bent, the popliteus tendon moves across knee bones, ligaments and other tendons. If the sliding motion is excessive, the tendon sometimes becomes irritated and inflamed, resulting in popliteal tendinitis. This often causes deep knee pain. Initial care involves rest and the application of alternating cold and hot packs. If this does not relieve the pain, a medical professional should be consulted about additional treatment. For instance, therapeutic massage is sometimes prescribed.
