Are text messaging and chat abbreviations in the dictionary?
By Forinfos - 26/02/2026 - 0 comments
As of 2015, several text message chat abbreviations are recognized as words, and multiple academically recognized dictionaries include them. The Oxford English Dictionary added "LOL," which stands for "laugh out loud," and "OMG," which means "oh my god," to its pages in 2011.
The Oxford English Dictionary also includes definitions for "FYI," which stands for "for your information," and "WAG," which means "wives and girlfriends." Despite such abbreviations' origins as space-saving acronyms in text messages and emails, the words have been used consistently for several years and are widely understood by a large audience, which means that they meet the criteria for recognition as legitimate words.
