The best time to cut grass is in the evening when the sun is at its lowest point. Avoid cutting grass during the afternoon when the sun is harsh. Be sure the grass is completely dry before mowing.

Cut grass when it is no higher than 3.5 inches tall. If it gets too tall, it makes it more difficult for a standard mower to cut it. Cutting the grass about once a week keeps the height at a manageable level. To improve growth and maintenance of the lawn, use a different mowing pattern every time the grass is cut. Always mow in a forward motion and rotate the mower to move in the opposite direction, as opposed to pulling back on the mower.
