When is the best time to plant roses?

The best time to plant roses is in early spring after the last frost or in early fall before the first expected frost. Once planted, a rose bush reaches its mature size in two to three years.
Plant roses where they can get six hours of direct sunlight per day. Be sure the roses receive 1 inch of water per week. They benefit from fertilizer in early spring and again in late summer. This encourages blooming from spring through fall. Do not trim new rose bushes for the first three years. After this time, trim them every spring. There is no need to deadhead the flowers, as they drop off on their own.
