What are some tips for multiplying mixed numbers?

Multiplying mixed numbers becomes much less difficult when the problem is rewritten with improper fractions. Once rewritten, the problem can be solved by multiplying the numerators together and denominators together, then simplifying the result by finding common multiples.

To convert a mixed number to an improper fraction, put the whole number in terms of the accompanying fraction and add it to the fraction component of the mixed number. For example, the mixed number 4 1/2 becomes 9/2 when expressed as an improper fraction, because 4 is equal to 8/2, which becomes 9/2 when the 1/2 from the mixed number is added.
