To replace a damaged electrical plug, gather the necessary tools, including a flat-head screwdriver and a pair of long-nose pliers. Also, get a non-polarized two-wire plug for a power cord. Make sure that this plug is identical to the plug that needs to be replaced, advises Home Depot.

When replacing a plug, make sure that the new one has a seal from a safety testing organization, such as Underwriters Laboratories. When cutting off the damaged cord, do so evenly and cleanly and do not slit or remove the insulation, recommends Home Depot. On the new plug, use the flat-head screwdriver to pry open the assembly clip.
