What is a tire load index?

The tire load index tells a driver the amount of weight a tire can handle. This weight, combined with the weight capacity of the other three tires, determines the load-carrying capacity of the entire vehicle.
It is very important that drivers never install a tire with lower tire load than what was originally installed on the car, as doing so makes the vehicle unsafe. Therefore, if a tire has a load index of 10, it should never be replaced with a tire rated less than 10.
A tire that has a tire load index of 95 has a maximum carrying capacity of 6,393 pounds, and each tire can safely handle 1,521 pounds.
