Are toilet tank replacement parts universal?

Universal replacement parts are available for toilet flappers, trip levers, fill valves and flush valves. Universal parts are used for toilets that are not marked with a model number or when parts are discontinued by the original equipment manufacturer.

Universal parts are available in different sizes to fit many different toilets. Measurements from the tank and any existing parts are compared to universal replacement parts to ensure proper fit. The depth of the tank and the maximum water depth are compared to replacement fill and flush valve heights if the original parts are not available. Trip levers are measured straight across from the end of the arm to the outside of the handle, and this measurement matches compatible replacement levers. The flush valve outlet diameter determines the replacement flapper diameter.
