Toothbrushes are typically made of plastic handles and nylon bristles, according to Colgate, in various handle styles. However, Wikipedia explains that there are also ecological toothbrushes that are made from biodegradable materials.
According to the Library of Congress, the toothbrush has existed since 3000 B.C., but the early versions bore no similarity to modern styles. Ancient civilizations used a "chew stick," which they rubbed against their teeth to clean them. The bristled toothbrush was not invented until 1498's China, when course hog hairs were attached to handles made of bamboo or bone. Dupont de Nemours created the first nylon bristles in 1938.
