The SR-71 entered service in 1966 and continued in operation until 1998. It remains the fastest piloted aircraft in history, as of 2015. In September 1974, the SR-71 set a record by flying from New York to London in one hour 54 minutes and set another record later in September 1974 by averaging more than 1,400 miles per hour in a flight from Los Angeles to London. This plane and the Concorde are the only aircraft known to have operated faster than the speed of sound for several hours at a time.
