Cellulitis is a bacterial infection treated with antibiotics, says WebMD. The strep or staph bacteria are the most likely of causes and can lead to a serious infection that eventually affects the entire body, such as sepsis. However, mild cases may be treated from home.
A person can be infected with cellulitis after any minor or major event causing a break in the skin, reports WebMD. However, those with diabetes or a weakened immune system are more susceptible to infection, tend to express more severe symptoms, and are more likely to have infections again in the future. Warmth, redness, swelling and pain are symptoms of cellulitis requiring medical consultation.
