There are 14 phalanges in each hand. Phalanges are commonly referred to as finger bones or toe bones. The human body has a total of 56 phalanges.
There are 27 bones in each hand. This gives the hand great range and flexibility. The capitate, hamate, lunate, pisiform, scaphoid, trapezium, trapezoid and triquetral bones are located in the wrist. The metacarpal bones are the five bones closest to the wrist, which make up the palm of the hand and thumb. The five proximal phalanges are the small bones after the first knuckle. The four middle phalanges of the hand are between the distal phalanges and proximal phalanges. Finally, the five distal phalanges of the hand are the bones at the end of each finger.
