There are Trader Joe's grocery stores located outside of California. Stores of the chain can be found in Arizona, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, New Hampshire, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York and North Carolina.

There are also stores in Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, Washington and Wisconsin. The chain opens its first Alabama location in 2015.

Trader Joe's began as a small convenience store chain. Through private labeling to keep prices low, it has built a strong following, with stores selling twice as much per square foot as its competitor Whole Foods.
