What training is required to become a master electrician?

A state-issued license is required to become a master electrician in most areas; other qualifications vary by location but usually include a high school diploma or GED, classroom vocational training or completion of a degree program, and completion of a specified number of years performing hands-on site work as an electrical journeyman or apprentice. In those states that do not issue master electrician licenses, an individual must hold a valid general electrician's license, pass an exam and posses the required number of years of hands-on experience.

Master electrician requirements are determined primarily by the State Board of Electrical Examiners. Those states that require a specified amount of time working as an electrical journeyman also require that some approved continuing education courses be taken in order to maintain a journeyman's license until the applicant becomes eligible to take the master electrician's exam.

The number of years of hands-on experience required to become a master electrician varies by state and can range between 2 and 10 years. Additionally, the work involved typically must comply with the National Electrical Code.

All states recognize three levels of skill: apprentice, journeyman and master electrician. Apprentices are only permitted to work under direct supervision of a journeyman electrician. Although they can work without direct supervision, journeyman electricians are required to perform all work according to a master electrician's direction.
