Tramadol hydrochloride tablets are used for relief from moderate to moderately severe pain, explains WebMD. An extended-release form is also available for treatment around the clock, states RxList.com.
Tramadol is typically taken every four to six hours as needed for pain relief. Dosage is ultimately based on the medical condition and response of the patient. Doctors may recommend that patients begin by gradually increasing lower doses to reduce the risk of side effects, explains WebMD. The maximum recommended dosage is 400 milligrams daily. While the drug may be taken with or without food, patients prone to or experiencing nausea should take tramadol with a meal.
