Resting the affected area is the first thing to do when treating a pinched, or compressed, nerve, according to Mayo Clinic. Other treatment options include medications, physical therapy and surgery.
Mayo Clinic recommends identifying and refraining from any activity that is causing the pain from the pinched nerve. Using a splint or brace helps immobilize the affected area and allows it to rest. Over-the-counter pain medications, such as ibuprofen, help reduce inflammation and associated pain.
For severe pain, WebMD notes that a doctor may prescribe narcotics, oral corticosteroids or steroid injections. Physical therapy sometimes helps relieve pain by stretching and exercising the muscles in the surrounding area. Surgery is an option if the pinched nerve does not respond to less radical treatments.
