The most common treatment for worms in dogs is a deworming drug, such as Fenbendazole, milbemycin, moxidectin, nitroscanate, piperazine or pyrantel. The vet gives the dog 1 to 3 doses to kill the adult worms, following up with more if needed.
Worms in dogs can be dangerous to both dogs and humans. Most are treatable and preventable. However, some are more difficult than others to treat if contracted, such as heart worms. There are shots and monthly tablets available that prevent heart worms, round worms, hook worms and more.
Prevention is the safest and most affordable route. However, if the worms are caught early, they are easier to treat. Puppies should be de-wormed three weeks after birth.
