What are the treatment options for liver damage?

Treatment for liver damage often depends on the extent of damage, if damage was caused by a short-term effect, or if liver failure has been a continuous, long-term process, explains WebMD. Treatments range from observation, medication and liver transplant.

If damage is caused by an acute cause, such as a virus, health care providers observe liver functions until the virus runs its course, and the liver recovers on its own, notes WebMD. If there is an inflammation from or overdose of a drug, medications to counteract the offending medication may be given to reverse the effects. In cases of long-term damage, such as years of alcohol use, a liver transplant is often necessary. A liver transplant is only necessary if liver damage is drastic.
