Treatment options for a torn or herniated disk typically include medication, therapy or surgery, says Mayo Clinic. A herniated disk occurs when one of the disks between the vertebrae does not function properly.

Medications vary based on the patient’s pain level and may include over-the-counter medicines, narcotics, nerve pain medicines, muscle relaxant and cortisone injections. Physical therapy may consist of exercise, stretching or applying heat and ice to the injured area. Some patients may be given short-term braces for their back or neck. Surgery is the final treatment option when all other plans have not subdued the numbness, loss of bladder control, difficulty standing and weakness, states Mayo Clinic.
