What treatments are available for canine Cushing's disease?

Some treatments for Cushing's disease in dogs include surgery or oral medication. Whether or not the dog can have surgery depends on if the disease is adrenal-dependent, as veterinarians cannot typically remove pituitary tumors in dogs, as of 2015.

Cushing's disease typically cannot be cured and must be managed with lifelong medication and blood tests. One drug that is approved to treat Cushing's is Vetroyl, which works by ceasing the production of cortisol in the adrenal glands. Another drug that treats the disease is Anipryl, but it is only effective against the pituitary-dependent version of the disease. Lysodren is another drug that can be used in dogs, but it can have severe side effects as it is typically used as a human chemotherapy drug.
