Dentists and periodontists treat gum disease, or periodontal disease, through a variety of methods that include deep-cleaning, medication and oral surgery. The method of treatment depends on the extent of the gum disease, according to the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research.

The goal of treating periodontal disease is to control the infection of the gums. The method of deep-cleaning called scaling and root planing scrapes away tartar from above and below the gum line and gets rid of rough spots on the tooth root where germs gather. In addition to scaling and planing, antibiotic, dentists can also include antimicrobial and antiseptic medications as part of the treatment plan. Surgical treatments such as flap surgery and bone and tissue grafts become necessary when deep-cleaning and medication treatment is unsuccessful, explains the NIDCR.
