Truffles are a type of fungi, similar to mushrooms, that grow beneath the ground. Truffles are one of the most treasured foods because they grow only in certain parts of the world, and are extremely hard to find.
Popular in French, Spanish, Greek and other European and Middle Eastern cuisines, truffles are usually unearthed using pigs or specially trained dogs. The main type of truffles are black truffles and white truffles. White truffles are typically found in the Piedmont region of Italy, while black truffles are located in the Perigord region of France. There are several other types of truffles as well, including desert truffles and summer truffles.
