Tunisia is famous for being part of the Arab Spring, which began in December of 2010, and for being the location of Carthage. Carthage was the center of trading during the Roman empire.
The Arab Spring uprisings in the Middle East spread to Tunisia when a man set himself on fire there in 2011. His death sparked protests that led to 300 additional deaths and the resignation of the Tunisian president. The country then held its first democratic elections later that year.
The city of Carthage was founded by the Phoenicians in the early 800s. It served as the capital of the Roman empire until its fall in 146 B.C., and it was then rebuilt on its own ruins.
