Do turtles hibernate?
By Forinfos - 07/05/2025 - 0 comments
Some turtle species do hibernate, though hibernation is most often associated with warm-blooded animals. Other turtles go into a less drastic state called torpor when the weather gets too cold for them.
The proper word for turtle hibernation might be brumation. The wood turtle seems to be a turtle that actually hibernates. This turtle is found in northern climates from Nova Scotia to Minnesota and south to Virginia. When the weather grows cold, it burrows into the muddy bottoms of bodies of water. The Mojave desert tortoise is also known to hibernate. Most of these tortoises hibernate in burrows from November to February.
