What type of deer is Bambi?

In the Disney film, Bambi is a whitetail deer. In the book "Bambi: A Life in the Woods," written by Felix Sultan, Bambi is a Black Forest roe deer.

Disney animators based Bambi off of two fawns that were imported from Maine to Disney Studios in California as references. Whitetail fawns sport white spots that trail from the base of their neck to their hindquarters. These spots help the fawn blend in with its environment. In the Disney movie, Bambi also had white spots when he was a fawn. Whitetail deer are the smallest species of deer in North America.
