Plastic surgeons usually perform blepharoplasty, the surgery to correct drooping eyelids, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. Blepharoplasty can treat eyelid puffiness, bags under the eyes, fine wrinkles and other problems associated with excess eyelid skin.
Blepharoplasty removes excess tissue from the eye area. During the procedure, the surgeon cuts along the fold of the eyelid, removes the drooping tissue and seals the incision, according to Mayo Clinic. The surgeon may perform other cosmetic procedures at the same time as blepharoplasty.
Persistent pain, excessive scarring, permanent change in vision and, in rare cases, blindness can occur as a result of blepharoplasty, reports the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. It is also possible that the eyelids begin to droop again after surgery. WebMD reports that upper-eyelid surgery may need to be repeated every five to seven years.
