In order to be a food critic, one must also be a writer; therefore, it is helpful to have an education in journalism, communications or other English-related field. Equally important is to know about food ingredients, preparation and service.
Self-teaching and enrolling in cooking lessons are fantastic methods for understanding how food ingredients behave when brought together, but taste buds also need training to identify each component in a dish. It's also important to remain fair and objective, because a food critic's job is to represent palates in general, not just the individual who is sitting in front of the plate. Anonymity is critical; otherwise, a recognized food critic may create biased reviews.
