Taking a civil service exam is a requirement to qualify to work as a sanitation worker in places like New York City. In New York, aspiring sanitation workers often must wait years before the city offers an opportunity to take the sanitation civil service exam.

Persons taking the sanitation civil service exam must fulfill exam eligibility requirements. For example, applicants for the New York City exam must reside in the New York area. A high school diploma or GED is another mandatory requirement. Applicants must have a valid state drivers license and successfully pass a physical examination. Passing the exam qualifies applicants to be hired for various government cleaning and trash removal jobs.
