The water iris is commonly cultivated in botanical gardens. The roots serve as a biological filter, as they clean excess nitrogen from water and remove contaminants and algae. Although the water iris grows in normal home garden soil, the iris prefers rich acidic soil with ample water. The original water iris is native to Europe and is known as the "yellow flag" to the French.
