According to Science Daily, the types of rock that make up the continental crust include metamorphic, sedimentary and granitic. These rocks form continents and shallow sea beds, which are called continental shelves.
The continental crust floats above the Earth’s mantle, as it is made up of a less dense material. The continental crust is also less dense than the oceanic crust, which is primarily made of basalt. However, the continental crust is up to 40 kilometers thicker than the oceanic crust, which is 7 to 10 kilometers thick. Around 40 percent of Earth’s surface is underlain by the continental crust.
