Rice can grow in any types of soil, as long as the soil is not very sandy. Clay soil is a common soil used in growing rice because it holds water for long periods of time.
Rice is a tropical plant that requires sufficient water to grow well. Therefore, the soil used in growing rice should have a good water holding capacity. Silt clay, silt clay loam and clay are some of the soil textures that are best for rice farming. The pH of the soil should be 6 or 7, but rice can also do well in a pH ranging from 4 to 8. Flat lands are better for rice farming to allow balanced water distribution.
