According to Overdrive, hotshot trucking typically refers to trucks in classes three to five. Trucks in this class range cover a gross vehicle weight range of 10,000 to 19,500 pounds.
Gross vehicle weight range describes the maximum operating weight of the vehicle. This includes any fuel, passengers and cargo. The weight of any trailers is excluded. Love to Know says most hotshot deliveries are time sensitive, needing to be delivered right away. Overdrive says power companies often use hotshot trucking to deliver important electrical equipment to keep the grid running. Overdrive notes that the maintenance intervals, and applicable costs, are more frequent, owing to the type of trucks used.
