What types of apps are there to track a cell phone?

Apple and Microsoft offer their own free solutions for locating lost phones and there are several apps available for Android devices, including Prey and Plan B. With the exception of Plan B, you must configure these apps while the phone is in your possession, as of 2015.

Plan B supports remote installation, which means that as long as the phone has a data connection and has been linked to a Google Play account, it is possible to remotely install the app after the phone has been lost, and use the app to request location information by sending SMS messages to the phone.
