The two types of Baker's German's chocolate are the original and the 4-ounce easy break bars. Baker's German's chocolate is pre-sweetened and contains 48 percent cacao.
Samuel German developed the recipe for the chocolate in 1852 while he was an employee of Walter Baker & Company. The chocolate is named for him, not the country of Germany. The sweet chocolate contains chocolate liquor, sugar, cocoa butter, flavorings and lecithin. German felt that bakers would find a pre-sweetened baker's chocolate more convenient, with the sugar already included in the recipe. The most popular recipe made with Baker's German's chocolate is German chocolate cake.
