What types of mattresses are best for side sleepers?

For side sleepers, softer mattresses are recommended because they conform to the natural curvature of the body while lying on the side. This type of mattress also allows the sleeper's body to sink into the mattress without putting pressure on the shoulders and hips.
Most firm mattresses do not provide the right kind of support for side sleepers; the exception is some firm mattresses with pillow tops. Side sleepers benefit from the neck support provided by contour pillows. Sleeping on the side is necessary for people with certain medical conditions. It relieves back pressure, eliminates snoring, reduces heartburn in people with acid reflux disease and encourages blood flow in pregnant women.
