Some types of residential kitchen exhaust fans are under-cabinet hoods, island hoods, downdraft hoods and wall-chimney hoods. Kitchen exhaust fans reduce cooking smells, heat and condensation by extracting them outside. They also trap grease and prevent it from being deposited on kitchen surfaces.

The layout of the kitchen and the size of the cooking surface determine the ideal type of kitchen exhaust fans. Because island or ceiling hoods hang from the ceiling and lack a wall alongside them to help funnel fumes, they should be wider than the cooking area on the island. Wall chimney hoods are affixed to the wall, while under-cabinet hoods are fixed to the bottom of a cabinet. Considered the least efficient type of exhaust fan, downdraft units are mostly used in kitchen islands.
